The composition features two figures suspended on the rungs of a ‘ladder’, and one reaching up, each intent on elevating their status. The playing cards symbolize the gamble we take on ourselves, despite the imposition of a centuries-old social order characterized by entrenched unfairness. This piece captures the continuous negotiation between those who have and those who need more.
The contrast between the formalized treatment of the figures and the chaotic backdrop highlights the dichotomy between the fluid nature of the world and our belief in certainty.
Exploring political and social forces and how they impact people with few resources is an ongoing driver of my work. My work is steeped in the human story: our need for connection, love, and vulnerable individuality, within a time of angst, social uncertainty, and polarisation.
